What I liked about the book was that it didn't paint a homogeneous, good-guys/bad guys picture of the French or the Germans, but allowed for depictions of decent and cruel people on both sides of the war. It was a nice change of pace for me and I really enjoyed the lighter, endearing and easier side to a WWII story that still had the depth and layers to make it an intriguing story for us.
